Are there any oppos who own an evo? Particularly an Evo 8 or Evo 9. I’ve watched a lot of videos on them out of boredom lately, and wanna learn more about them! Is the 4G63 really that easy to get 700-800hp out of??
Pic of a nice evo for your time:

I’m really trying to figure out what people are looking for when they want to know if it’s “easy” to triple a car’s stock horsepower. A 2JZ is so “easy” to get 800hp out of: drive your Supra to Titan Motorsports, give them your car and between five and ten thousand dollars, come back in a week. An Evo is similar.

That much power is relatively easy. That much power reliably is a whole other story.

Facetious part - There are no working Evos on oppo because either a) they’re lying (about having the car or having theirs work) or b) they’re fixing it. Always. Forever.
Factualish part - They’re stupidly fast cars but they make tuned subarus look as reliable as a 90s corolla. I have never seen such a group of owners find it so acceptable to rebuild everything every 5000 miles. Used to be part of a car club when I had a vintage Audi quattro (inline 5 turbo. Fun times.). I’d say... for tuned subarus that RSVPed to something like a cruise or a driving event, 1 out of 5 would fail to show due to mechanical issues. But 3 out of 5 or even 4 out of 5 evos regularly failed to show up due to mechanical faults. SO! Is it easy to build power? YES. Will it blow up every 1000 miles? YES.

I do want an Evo 8 or 9. I think they look fantastic. I wouldn’t want an insane build like this one but just something simple like the one you posted.

gotcha. so let's say 400hp. think an evo could do that reliably?

hahah, I’m just curious since it seems to build a fast evo it takes a lot less work than to build a fast Subaru for example. was just wondering if it's true

Generally when someone asks if building so-and-so power is easy, they have no idea what they’re doing, and haven’t actually ever built anything up before.
To answer the OP’s question, the answer is subjective. It’s very easy to pay someone to build up a 700-800 hp Evo depending on how much money you make. There’s nothing “easy” about building a 700-800 hp car, but it can be done. You really should ever expect Camry DD reliability from any car that you double/triple the factory power on.

what about a relatively stock evo, I e one with just a couple bolt-ons and software. think that would be a relatively reliable car?

yes i made over 300whp on a stock 4g63 with headgaskets and studs. All stock everything else in the motor

Huh? I know of three evos personally that have no mechanical issues. One is 415WHP, One is about 490 and another with 680WHP and the only issues they have are little ones that done affect engine.
Subarus on the other hand... i dont know many that make that power without way more work done to them ($) and break way more often

You see more STIs than Evos on the road in part because of relative sales and in part because Evos puke out their transmissions at even stock power levels if abused.
The Subaru is easier from your perspective because a home tinkerer can buy a Cobb AccessPort and get the car to maybe 300whp or so without having to go to a tuner. Anything beyond that, regardless of how much power the block or transmission or top end can hold, translates to “go to tuner, write very large check”.

The great thing about the EVO is that it is basically a race car drive train in a shit box car. That is probably why the WRX was much more sucessful, it was a bit more refined.

I mean, I had a 300whp Subaru with 160,000 miles on it, stock block. The one guy I knew who blew up his Subaru had 217,000 miles on a stock block with a VF39. There was another guy who spun a rod bearing in his EJ205 at...180,000 miles? The car was ten years old and had been running an aftermarket turbo for half that time.
The last time I knew an Evo owner who had “little issues” they were transmissions 1 and 2. The 4G63 is a stout engine, the problem is literally every other subsystem in the car. Even the Evo owners I knew without any problems all made sure the car disappeared before 75,000 miles (all Evo X owners). It’s almost like they knew something.

*IF* you are telling the truth you know of the only 400+ hp evos with “no mechanical issues”.
But yeah, subaru owners are a close second. I think the tolerances are tighter than people think or something. No one seems concerned at how fragile their cars are.....Blowing up an engine a year once you cross the 400hp mark just seems to be the amateur subaru tuner life.....

Light mods seem to be okay for subarus, maybe.....But that same club had quite a few blowing up at 60-80k with only a medium amount of work, even with proper support mods for power like upgraded radiators and new hoses and fittings if the car was older and whatnot. Granted, I think some of them were worked on by tamed parrots that were read nothing but forum posts (SQUAWK! 30 horsepower! 30 horsepower! BWAK! The shop manual has the wrong torque number for these bolts!) but still.....Not as impressive as I would imagine it should be.

Its just who builds them. All the ones i know were done by guys that know their stuff about the 4g63 engine

Well no matter what car you double factory horsepower you need to send the trans and diffs to TRE and get them rebuilt. That.

Both Subarus and Evos have drivetrains and engines that are very well-documented. Both require major work to cross the 300whp threshold (engine for the Subaru, driveline for the Evo). Both are often purchased by idiots.
Evo owners and Subaru owners are going to go for each other’s kneecaps on the internet, it’s the way of things. Meanwhile, I traded mine in and found myself saying “damn, this BMW is way more reliable”. Talk about sentences I never thought I’d hear coming out of my mouth...

I used to own an Evo 8. At it’s peak I was running 525whp and 472lbs/ft wtq.
I loved my Evo but it was far from reliable once it got north of 400 whp. I broke a laundry list of costly items including having to rebuild the entire motor from ground up due to a snapped timing belt while driving at high RPM’s.
I spent a lot of time and money on the car and eventually sold it off to buy a house. Luckily I got close to what I had into it for a sale price.
The one thing I really miss is the handling nature of the car. I have owned WRX’s as well as the EVO and I would have put the drivability of the EVO up against any Subaru out there built in the same era.
The moral of the story is. If you can find a clean and unmodified example of an Evo 8 or 9, don’t be afraid to pick it up. If you are going to modify it and hope to get reliable usage at high hp plan on having another car as a backup daily driver because anything north of 400 hp will leave you stranded along I95 south of Houston at least once.

hate to say it, but no matter the car, it can only be two of the following three things.
cheap.
fast.
reliable.
cheap and fast won’t be reliable, fast and reliable wont be cheap, reliable and cheap won’t be fast.

I own a 10.
Can confirm other responses. It will be a mega fun car. It will also break a lot and frustrate the shit out of you.
Especially if it’s got lots of power, you’ll probably crash it. Evos get crashed a lot, mostly because they encourage silly driving. 99% of the time the amazing AWD and chassis will bring you out looking like a hero, but the other 1% you will definitely fuck up.
Check my post history for evidence of all of these things (including the crashing lmao).

It all dependson how strong the stock internals are. Cranking up the boost is easy, but when you have to install hardened conrods and pistons to keep up with it, adding power suddenly becomes not so easy. I don’t know much about evos but 400 sounds like a reasonable limit before serious supporting mods need to be made.

If you really want an evo....buy the cheapest 8 you can find. (even with high miles) Have the transfer case and tranny rebuilt. Add some boltons to make decent power and youll be fine.

I’m sure you could get a lot of power out of it. But the rest of the car doesn’t like that.
There’s a reason you see so many Evo shells online.

yeah... eh, I guess 400crank hp is a good number, and not too absurd for one of these
